Music Ringtones
The music ringtone industry has exploded over the past few years as cell phone ownership has become ubiquitous among teens and most other age groups.
As the cell phone has become more of an entertainment device than a communications device (well, most communications is a form of entertainment), consumers and companies have been driven to increase the entertainment functionality of mobile devices.
While games were initially projected to be the winner in the cell phone entertainment wars, they certainly lost out to music ringtones. This should have been expected as music is a vital part of our lives and the music industry is bigger than the gaming industry. Moreover, mobile gaming simply can’t compete with the gaming systems that are now available in the home, which have amazing graphics and more complex controllers.
Conversely, music can sound pretty good from a cell phone, although not as great as a stereo. As such, music ringers became big business. All major cell phone carriers help distribute music tones to their subscribers. They take a piece of the action too -- the cell carriers charge the ringtone merchants money each time they deliver the ringtone to the users phone.
The ringtone market is here to stay. As the quality gets better and better, someday soon you’ll hear a tone and will be unable to distinguish whether it is coming from a stereo or a mobile phone.
